The Furies Book Review
The Furies Book Review
If by goin with the plot you call this YA. I'd believe you, but after having listened to it on audio with libro.fm. It doesn't read like YA to me. It's lyrical and bold. It was easy to follow I'll give it that, but it also had a complexity to it.
The story comes off as simple. Girl found dead (you know that page one) no one knows why or how. Violet our narrator relays to us the events leading up to this girls murder. We follow the story of four girls who become obsessed with the history of a school having to do with witch trials. Then things get out of hand. Really it has Secret History written all over it, so I'll admit the story is not entirely original, but it still manges to grip and take you on a ride. I was still shocked by the turns in event and the eventual revelation. I'll admit full stop I'm not good at predictions so for me everything was a surprise.
Now Violet as a character was some what frustrating. Not that I didn't enjoy readng her. I did. Just there were moments where though you know she's smart she does some dumb things. It's hard to go into without spoiling anything so I wont give examples, but just not she's not always a likable character. I don't mind that myself, but some people seem to. So just a warning. To be honest I can't say I really like any of the characters as people. They were all flawed and that's accurate, but none of them were really that nice. It had definite Mean Girls vibes to it, maybe more Jawbreakers as things do go wrong.
So listening to this on audio ... well the thing about that is they had a good narrator, so plus there. However their were moments where I wanted to reread to try and comprehend a little better what had just been said. That happenes with most audio books I find, but this time it felt more noticeable by the end. There were definitely things that I felt left me a little confused at the end. Moments where I wasn't sure if my questions had been answered and I missed it or if they'd been glossed over. So with that in mind, it more likely would have been better for me to wait till the hard copy had arrived, but as it stands I was impatient.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who's looking for a nice fall creepy read. Honestly it didn't need to be a October read. It would have done fine later on in the colder months, but with the school setting and witches I felt it'd be best around Halloween. I'm very happy I read it and would love to discuss it with anyone else who's read it. I gave it five stars.
