5 Gothic Fiction Books

Five Gothic Fiction Books!!!

Here are five gothic books for the Fall\Winter season. Check them out. Some I don't hear about much, but some are classic. They are in no order.
  1. The Visitors - Marion is an emotional stunted child like woman. Who lives with her brother John. She has a simple life and follows a simple routine. While her brother has visitors down in his celler. Though she hears screams and knows something bad is happening she keeps to herself and allows it to continue. Out of fear of John. This book is a slow burn and character study. The plot though not perfect. It holds your interest, and allows you to fully fall into the trap that is this old house. The brother, sister pair are dark and both are unlikable. Though you do feel bad for Marion. All in all it's a solid read and easy to spead though.
  2. The Girl Who Couldn't Read - Lets begin by saying this is technically a sequel, but I read it first and was completely as ease with the plot and understanding the story. Mind you there is an aspect of the story that will be less thrilling if you haven't read the first book Florence and Giles. This story follows a doctor who comes to a womens asylum. The treatment of the women is awful. It's a grimmy and unsanitary place. As you and this doctor begin to go though the asylum, he comes across a young girl they call Jane Dove. She has no memory of her past life and speaks in a very strange dialect. He believes he can cure this girl and she can help him get away from his troubles. I really enjoyed this book. The first book was ok, but I prefer this one. Not often do I prefer the sequel to the first book. This story is plot driven and moves quickly. It took me very little time to get through it. I would say if you enjoy asylum stories this one is great.
  3. We Have Always Lived in a Castle - It took me way to long to get to this book! I knew about it in 2015 when I started my booktube channel, and I didn't pick it up till 2018 when I did my Shirley Jackson spotlight and read all her books. Mind you she is now one of my all time favorite authors. This book is the story of two sisters living in a house in a small town. Years before the story begins their family is murdered. They and their uncle are the only survivors of the killing, and the oldest siter is blamed for it. She is found innocent and let go, but the town never believes it and treats her and her younger sister horribly. Within the first few chapters a unknown and distant cousin arrives and begins to insert himself into their lives. The younger sister Kat is not having this. She does not trust him and wants him gone, but the older sister likes the company and wants to be welcoming. Needless to say things escalate. I just love this book and would recommend it to anyone honestly. Completely adore it.
  4. Rebecca - I read this book in a day. It's not a very short book either. It's about a medium size. This one is about an unnamed narrator who falls in love with a man named Max. This man is very wealthy and they are married very quickly. He takes her home to Manderley, and her new life begins. Something is wrong though. The staff (specifically Mrs. Danvers) are obsessed with Max's late wife Rebecca and spend most of the book comparing the unnamed narrator to her. As the book goes on things get creepier and stranger. We find out Rebecca died and ... I'm not saying any more. This book is amazing! Oh so nearly perfect. I read it every year, this year included. So good.
  5. Bodies of Water - This last one, I don't know. I liked it, but I don't think it's for everyone. The plot sounds good enough. It flashes between present day and Victorian London. It goes into water treatment facilities. Not the kind that treats water, but the kind that treats women with water to control and change them. A young girl moves into these water facilities current day and begins to obsessively research the treatment. It's a story about madness and feminism. I enjoyed it well enough, and I'll most likely read it again. I'm not in a hurry though.

These are five gothic reads I would recommend. Have fun! Talk Friday.
